Frequently Asked Questions

Do you only sell in the Pacific Northwest?

We are selling to customers residing in the US, where Redwoods and Sequoias are most likely to thrive. Climate change is expanding the regions suitable for these trees to grow, so we are selling them in the following states:

  • California
  • Idaho
  • Washington
  • Oregon

Where are the seedlings from?

We partner with experienced commercial nurseries to contract grow a year in advance all the redwood seedlings we anticipate selling to our customers in the following winter/spring planting season.

The redwoods we provide start from seed sourced from the wild from redwood stands in their native range. The seed is tested for viability and planted in potting soil mix in containers where they will germinate in a controlled greenhouse environment until they are large enough to be moved outside until being the end of the growing season. The trees that you purchase will come to you with their entire root system intact in the growing medium.

In December, January and February, we lift them from their growing containers, pack them 10 to a bundle in plastic bags, and place them boxes in cold storage until we receive your order.

When will I receive my seedlings?

Our nursery partners will do three lifts during the dormant months, in December, January and February. You can select the month you'd like to receive your seedlings when you add a box to your cart.

When the shipping month you selected comes around, we will fulfill your order at the beginning of the month, and notify you once your order has been shipped.

How do I care for my seedlings?

When you receive your bundle of trees, keep them in a cool environment, around 34F, in their original plastic bags until planting. They will keep in for several weeks this way, but check for excessive moisture – which can lead to molding – or excessive drying, which can lead to seedling die back.

When you are ready to plant, remove the plastic bag, and plant them in soil no deeper than their original growing medium where the stem shoot/root transition starts.

Mulch will help maintain soil moisture, and fertilizer is not necessary.

When is the best time to plant my seedlings?

The best time to plant is during the dormant late winter/early spring when all threat of hard frost has passed and there is still plenty of spring rain to water them in. You can plant them in their final location or re-pot them in 2.5 gallon containers or plant in a nursery row at 8”- 12” apart in your garden if you want to grow them to a larger size for a year or two before planting to their final location.

How far apart should I plant my seedlings?

Final spacing when planting in their permanent location should allow at least 12’ between trees. You may need to water them in the summer, especially if they are in containers or in your garden nursery rows.
